STILL TIME TO SIGN UP FOR “McIntyre 101” Study Circles

December 11, 2020

The McIntyre Subcommittee and Portsmouth Listens, with the support of project developer Redgate Kane and with assistance from Boston-based urban design firm The Principle Group, are initiating study circles in January to deliberate on the opportunity for new public space to enjoy at McIntyre.

The City of Portsmouth and the McIntyre developer Redgate Kane are collaborating on the design of a new public gathering place on a portion of the site behind the McIntyre Building, bounded by Penhallow and Bow streets. The City has asked Portsmouth Listens and the Principle Group, the City’s urban design consultants, to engage local citizens in a visioning process to make this new public gathering place a success for downtown Portsmouth.

To sign up to participate in the study circles, click here or call City Hall at 603-610-7211. The deadline is December 17 at midnight and participation is open to any city resident. Space is limited by the number of trained facilitators for the study circle. The City wants input from everyone, so there will be online tools and surveys to get additional input from all who sign up. For further information about the study circles, please email portsmouthlistens@gmail.com.

The “McIntyre 101” kickoff event on Dec 16 provided this presentation on the current state of the project and the public space opportunities. The study circles will assist designers at The Principle Group to develop sketches of what is possible and the results will be shared with the public after the study circles complete their work in January.

In a joint statement, the McIntyre Committee and Redgate Kane said, “Both the City and Redgate Kane support the Portsmouth Listens McIntyre public space dialogue as a step forward in considering an approach to thoughtfully adding more public space. We both want to achieve this as cost efficiently as possible. We look forward to everyone's input.”
