City Reopens Spinnaker Point Adult Fitness Center on June 7

June 3, 2021

Spinnaker Point Adult Fitness Center reopens on Monday, June 7 at 6am. All members and new members can register upon their first visit.

The City of Portsmouth closed Spinnaker Point a year ago as a precaution to protect against the spread of COVID-19. One of the concerns that needed to be addressed before reopening was an evaluation of the air circulation inside the facility.

Since then, the City has made repairs that allow the air-handling system to function without the significant and unbudgeted investment that was originally anticipated to improve or replace it. With data regarding the community transmission of COVID-19 trending downward, and with more than 70 percent of the adult population served by Spinnaker Point vaccinated, concerns about viral transmission from indoor activities at the facility have been reduced as well.

City Manager Karen Conard noted, “The City does not own the Spinnaker Point Adult Fitness Center but has ten years left on the lease of the facility. Maintaining the facility and reopening in a timely manner prompted the decision to make repairs to the antiquated controls, louvers and dampers to bring the HVAC system back to its original design capacity. The significant investment on the HVAC system, locker room rehabilitation, repairing a leak in the pool, replacing the roof and work on entry railings are cost-effective ways to extend the use of the facility over the remaining life of the lease.”

Equipment in the fitness room will be positioned to allow for sufficient distancing and other protocols will be in place.

Spinnaker Point will be open Monday-Friday, 6am-8pm and Saturday-Sunday, 7am-4pm.  Please call 603-766-1483 for more information.
