City Starts Work on 95 Mechanic St. Seawall Reconstruction on Aug 23

August 18, 2021

As planned, ACK Marine, under contract to the City’s Department of Public Works, will begin work Monday, August 23, 2021 on the project to rebuild the seawall at 95 Mechanic Street. Because the project requires driving pilings for construction purposes, the Department of Public Works has secured all necessary NH Department of Environmental Services permits and contracted with Hartford Structural Inspections to complete documentation of adjacent structures to monitor any unanticipated effects that result from the construction.

The 95 Mechanic Street Seawall replacement project is the first step that needs to be completed in advance of other improvements to that site and to public properties on either side. The City acquired the property in 2014 in anticipation of the future need (as articulated in the FY23 and FY24 Capital Improvement Plans) to replace the Mechanic Street pump station. When the wharf collapsed in August 2019, Portsmouth DPW brought in an emergency team to complete demolition of the wharf and buildings and to secure the site. The seawall replacement project was delayed due to the pandemic.

A public information meeting on the project was held June 29.  For the video recording of that meeting, click here.
