Market Street Closed to Traffic May 8 to May 12, Open to Pedestrians

May 12, 2023

UPDATE: Market Street between Bow and Market Square is now REOPENED to vehicles, day and night. Businesses are OPEN and pedestrian traffic continues. Parking limits still in effect.

Starting Monday May 8, 2023, the DPW sewer line work on Market Street in conjunction with the ongoing utility code compliance project between Bow and Daniel Streets requires closing the street completely overnight for several days that week.

DPW needs to excavate an entrance pit at the head of Market Street where it enters Market Square that will be too large to allow vehicular traffic to pass near it. This pit is needed as the entry point for the underground sewer repair work.

The construction will take place from 7 am to 7 pm daily, but cannot be covered to allow traffic overnight. Emergency vehicles and trash collection vehicles will have access from the Bow Street end of Market Street.

Sidewalks on Market Street and access to Commercial Alley businesses will remain open to pedestrian traffic throughout the work and signage will help guide pedestrians to the affected businesses.

DPW also continues to facilitate the project utility work, which is proceeding on schedule so that Eversource, Unitil, Comcast and Consolidated Communications can complete their work.

Restoration of disturbed brick areas will also begin this week.

Sean Clancy, the Assistant City Manager for Economic and Community Development, will serve as the primary point of contact for all businesses. In addition, the DPW on-site staff Marc Batchelder and Christine Sproviero will continue to supervise the work.
