City installs pedestrian crosswalk beacon at Memorial Bridge intersection

September 26, 2019

On Monday, September 30 Electric Light Company of Cape Neddick, under contract to the City, begins installation of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system adjacent to the Memorial Bridge parking lot on Dutton Avenue (the road that splits left from State Street just before the bridge). The pedestrian-activated push-button RRFB Pedestrian Crosswalk Systems are proven to increase driver awareness and response by as much as 90%. This installation was requested by residents, and was approved by the Parking and Traffic Safety Committee at their June 6, 2019 meeting, and approved by the City Council at their July 15, 2019 meeting. The City currently has six of these systems in various locations. They are all solar-powered.
