Fraudulent Delivery Scam Arrest

October 9, 2019

On October 8th, the Portsmouth Police received a call from a resident about a new iPhone that was delivered to his house from AT&T, that he did not order. Being familiar with recent scams regarding these deliveries, the resident called to alert the police. Members of the Portsmouth Police Special Investigations Unit initiated surveillance on the residence in question.

At 3:45 pm, the officers witnessed a vehicle with a New York registration approach the residence. One of the two occupants stepped out and took the package from the front porch. The investigation ultimately revealed that the two males were involved in a large scale scam where they have illegally obtained Personally identifiable information (PII), and make purchases in unsuspecting individual’s names, and in many cases, have the valuables sent to the victim’s home. Like in this case, they arrive shortly thereafter to take possession of the valuable. In many cases the PII is purchased form the dark web resulting from data breaches. Upon approach of the men, a short pursuit was initiated, which resulted in an addition three motor vehicle charges for Tabar.
