Wednesday, October 10th is International Walk to School Day. To celebrate, three Portsmouth Schools are participating this year with their own Walk to School Day events, including:

City Officials want to remind motorists to be aware that crossing guards will be stationed at positions throughout the City in conjunction with the start of the new school season Monday, August 27, 2018. Crossing guards assist students and parents walking and biking to school. Drivers are urged to use an abundance of caution near school neighborhoods, plan travel routes away from heavy school traffic, and obey posted school speed limits, and crossing guard signals.

In honor of staff appreciation week, we’re posting school-specific electronic bulletin boards where we encourage all the members of our community: students, parents and guardians, administrators and fellow staff members to drop a note of appreciation to any of our dedicated staff members in the Portsmouth School Department.

Congratulations to the Portsmouth and SAU #50 recipients of this years' Clipper Foundation Grants. Thanks to the Clipper Foundation for awarding $30,000 this year to support innovative education practices. Below are descriptions of the projects receiving awards this year.

The Stark Street Bridge will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic beginning on Monday, January 29th. The bridge will be completely replaced and will not be reopen until Columbus Day. Temporary lane closures on the Route 1 Bypass will be permitted during working operations. Additionally, brief complete traffic shut downs will be allowed on the Bypass between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Over the last few weeks we have met with groups of parents, staff, and students to engage in a discussion about how we as a school system celebrate diversity and address any incidents where students, families or staff do not feel welcome in our school community.

We live and work in a special community. Recent open house events at the high school and middle school were wonderful examples of parent engagement and school-community connections. Our students benefit in so many ways from the commitment in this community to excellence in education. Recently the Board and administration took an in-depth look at the performance and participation of students along socioeconomic lines, particularly those students on free or reduced lunch compared to those who are not.

Between Central Office and the schools across the Portsmouth School District we know frequent and clear communications with families, students and staff are essential for any high functioning school system, so we’re continuously working to improve our outreach. We would like to take a moment to share just a few of our communications tools to ensure everyone can follow the moves of our bustling district.
