Sunday Meditation Series Starts January 10th
 Beginning on Sunday, January 10 and continuing for eight consecutive Sundays from 1:30-2:30, the Portsmouth Public Library will offer a free meditation series for all levels taught by Lily Sibley, E-500 RYT, owner of Ocean Spirit Yoga.
Although registration is not required, please plan to attend all eight session as each will build upon the previous ones. No meditation experience is necessary and any level of curiosity is acceptable! Open to Portsmouth Public Library members, this series will be held in the Levenson Room.

Monday Night Knitting, a monthly knitting group
 Knitters of all levels are encouraged to participate in a new monthly Monday night knitting group. Socialize with fellow knitters in the Portsmouth community and show off your projects! Meetings will run from 7:00pm to 8:30pm and take place in the McLeod Room.
The first meeting is January 11th. Following meetings will be held on:
- February 8th
- March 8th
- April 5th

Money Matters Workshop on Wednesday, February 3rd at 6pm

Musical Conversations with Chris, Wed., February 17th at 7:00pm
 Join Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra Musical Director Christopher Hill on Wednesday, February 17th at 7pm as he examines Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, the Eroica. The roundtable listening/discussion session will explore the music and the culture that surrounded the composition. Come to develop a beginning understanding of the music, or come to share your own experience and knowledge.
The monthly Musical Conversations series will continue through May. In the meantime, why not listen to some Beethoven symphonies in advance.
- Deep Winter Film Series - Thursday Nights
Our Thursday night movie series starts up again on January 14th. All movies begin at 7PM in the Levenson Room.
January 14th: State of Play - 127 minutes
R ated PG13. Starring Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren and Ben Affleck, a team of investigative reporters work alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman's mistress.
January 28th : Grey Gardens
- 103 minutes
Unrated. Starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. Based on the life stories of the eccentric aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis (both named Edith Bouvier Beale aka "Big and Little Edie") raised as Park Avenue débutantes but who withdrew from New York society, taking shelter at their Long Island summer home, "Grey Gardens."
February 11th : Bright Star - 119 minutes
Rated PG. Starring Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw. The drama based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, which was cut short by Keats' untimely death at age 25.

February 25th: Whip It
- 120 minutes
Rated PG13. Starring
Ellen Page and Marcia Gay Harden.
In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.

This Sunday a new series of musical performances entitled "Music from the Traditions" will begin at 2pm in the Levenson Room.
Sunday, September 13th: The Kossoy Sisters
Known for their clear bell-like harmonies, the sisters, Irene and Ellen, are noted for their version of "I'll Fly Away" in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou? The sisters most recently released album is Hop on Pretty Girls.
Sunday, October 11th: Noteworthy Duo
Flutist Lisa Schroeder and guitarist Michael Anthon Nigro join their musical talents in a program featuring prominent and less-known Latin American composers. They aim to reach the non-classical audience as well as inspire the classical listener. Check out one of their CDs from the library's collection.
Sunday, November 22nd: Too Human
With vocals, guitar and percussion, Ellen Schwartz and Roger Bruno make "good music with a lot of heart." From Jazz and blues to pop and R&B, their fresh interpretation brings new life to classics from the American Songbook. Explore three of their CDs in the library's collection.
Sunday, April 11, 2010: Two Old Friends
Mac McHale and Emery Hutchins return to the Library to delight audiences young and old with a combination of Irish and American music. With banjo, guitar, mandolin, bodran, octave mandolin and heart-warming harmonies, Two Old Friends engages the audience. Be prepared to sing along. Check out their CD from the library's collection.
Sunday, May 16, 2010: Strathspey and Reel Society of NH
Founded in 1988, The Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire seeks to preserve and promote Scottish culture through the playing of traditional Scottish music. This concert will feature a variety of performers from the society playing on a multitude of indigenous instruments. Check out their 2005 concert CD from the library's collection.
Saturday, June 12, 2010: Matthew Abelson
An accomplished and innovative hammered dulcimer player, Matthew Abelson will perform a variety of music from American roots to traditional Irish tunes to classical to Renaissance and Jazz. His performances are multi-faceted, weaving together humorous anecdotes, poetry and dramatic stories.
