POSITION TITLE: Equipment Mechanic (2 positions)

SALARY RANGE: $22.53 - $24.82
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED) and not less than three years experience maintaining and repairing light and heavy equipment. The equivalent of two years post secondary training in automotive or equipment mechanics and a working knowledge of computer diagnostics and record keeping or an equivalent combination of training and experience are required. Applicants should also have a knowledge of a variety of hydraulic systems and tier 4 diesel engines. An incumbent must possess or obtain within 12 months a valid commercial drivers license, class B, have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City and shall supply his/her own tools. Obtaining additional certification or licensing may be required. ASE Certifications a plus.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The purpose of this position is to maintain all public works, light to heavy tools and equipment in a reliable and safe condition so as to be available for service according to approved standards. The work involves performing all types of equipment maintenance and repair work. This includes performing routine and specialized maintenance for all equipment, maintaining tools and equipment in the most cost effective manner, recording all equipment maintenance and associated costs, using wisely parts and supplies and recommending maintenance and repair improvements to reduce overall operating costs. It also involves instructing operators regarding proper operating and maintenance procedures and recommending appropriate corrective actions. Performance is subject to review according to the City's personnel plan through observation, reports and the results achieved.
Examples of Essential Job Functions:
1. Reads equipment specifications, repair manuals and implements adopted maintenance schedules and procedures. Does preventative and routine maintenance on lawn mowers, cars, truck, loaders, graders, etc. Instructs operators in the proper care, use and preventative equipment maintenance checks. Prepares equipment maintenance reports through work orders and/or other job cost and control procedures. Implements appropriate corrective actions to achieve equipment availability, safety, maintenance, repair and cost control standards and objectives.
2. Performs equipment maintenance and repair work involving tasks ranging in complexity from checking sufficiency of fluid levels and pressures to complete engine and equipment disassembly, repair and rebuild and working with parts and repair vendors. Forms, cuts, welds, brazes and otherwise works and adheres metals and other equipment materials. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and other equipment systems. Is subject to call out to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
3. Uses the most cost effective methods, parts, materials and vendors to maintain and repair equipment according to approved procedures. Compares job estimates to actual costs.
4. Works according to approved employee and equipment safety procedures.
