August is National Immunization Awareness Month

August 5, 2022

National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held in August to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages from infants to elderly. The goal of NIAM is to raise awareness about the important role vaccines play in preventing serious, sometimes deadly, diseases.

The Portsmouth Health Department wants to remind everyone of the critical role vaccinations have in protecting our health and the health of the community. During NIAM, we encourage you to talk to your doctor, nurse or healthcare provider to ensure you and your family are protected against serious diseases by getting caught up on routine vaccination.

As your children head back to school this fall, it’s particularly important for you to work with your child’s doctor or nurse to make sure they get caught up on missed well-child visits and recommended vaccines.

Remember to take care of yourself too! The need for vaccines does not change with age. The protection you receive from vaccination as a child can wear off over time. The vaccines you need as an adult are determined by factors including age, lifestyle, health condition(s), and which vaccines you’ve previously received during your life. Make sure to receive any vaccines you need to stay healthy. Use CDC’s adult vaccine assessment tool to see which vaccines might be right for you.
