Message from the Chief
The City of Portsmouth, NH is consistently rated as one of the top ten places in America to live and raise a family. The Police Department is proud of the fact that our contribution to Portsmouth’s superior quality of life and relatively low crime rate plays a significant role in this determination. The Portsmouth Police Department, much like the City itself, is a vibrant and dynamic organization with a rich history. We offer qualified candidates an opportunity to join the ranks of a premier law enforcement agency that has established a 150-year history of dedicated and professional service to the community. We invite you to consider a career in law enforcement and challenge you to join the men and women of the Portsmouth Police Department in upholding the highest standards of professional excellence through service to the community and the people we serve.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Magnant, Chief of Police

Recruitment and Hiring Process
The Portsmouth Police Department has an on-going recruitment and hiring process for sworn personnel. Candidates for the position of police officer who are currently full time sworn police officers with another law enforcement agency may apply to the Portsmouth Police Department by sending a resume and cover letter to:

Portsmouth Police Department
Personnel & Training Division
3 Junkins Avenue
Portsmouth, NH 03801

Candidates for the position of police officer who are not full time sworn police officers are directed to the McIntosh Police Testing Alliance. The first step for these candidates is to take the entrance exam at McIntosh College in Dover, NH.  To register for the entrance exam, contact:

McIntosh Police Testing Alliance
23 Cataract Avenue
Dover, NH 03820
(603) 750-1415

or go to:  http://www.mcintoshcollege.edu/programs/criminal-justice.asp

If we need candidates or are establishing an eligibility list for police officer positions we will use the results from the last two tests and the letters of interest from current full time candidates to conduct our second step which is a physical agility exam. This exam includes a 1.5-mile run, bench press, push-ups, sit-ups, a flexibility test and a swim test. We then hold an Assessment Center/Oral Board Day for qualified candidates. An extensive background investigation is conducted on selected candidates. We use these results along with all previous test results to create our eligibility list.

The Portsmouth Police Department is comprised of approximately 68 full-time police officers, 28 auxiliary police officers, and utilizes the services of 10 civilian dispatchers and 17 clerical staff. Any inquiries on civilian employment opportunities should also be directed to the Portsmouth Police Department, Personnel and Training Division.

The Police Commission directs the Police Department. There is a Chief and Deputy Chief system in place. There are 17 officers in the ranks of Captain, Lieutenant, or Sergeant. Approximately 12 officers are assigned to Detectives and Family Services and the remainder to the Patrol Division.

The City of Portsmouth is located on New Hampshire’s Seacoast, midway between Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. History abounds in Portsmouth and the city is rich in architectural heritage. This heritage is probably best exemplified by Strawberry Banke, a living maritime community museum and by Portsmouth’s picturesque landscape and architecture. Portsmouth is also home to approximately 30,000 people, major industry, an international airport, and a strong, thriving economy.
