Bird platform installed at Peirce Island

April 1, 2019

Public Works crews recently installed a platform ideal for eagle or osprey nesting behind the Peirce Island Wastewater Treatment Facility. The platform, built by Steve Miller of Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, came to fruition thanks to a $1,500 grant from Northeast Utilities, now Eversource, obtained by the City’s Sustainability Department.

“As the reconstruction of the wastewater treatment facility site continues through next year, it is a great opportunity to add more sustainable features to the area,” said Portsmouth’s Environmental Planner/Sustainability Coordinator Peter Britz. “We’re grateful that we were able to apply a grant towards the platform to assist wildlife and look forward to working on revitalizing Peirce Island’s recreation trails as the new plant is completed.”

Throughout the month of April, the City will share the latest sustainable news at https://www.cityofportsmouth.com/city/earth-month-2019.
