City announces new Zagster bike station sponsored by The Kane Company

March 5, 2019

The City and Zagster are pleased to announce that The Kane Company has signed an agreement to sponsor an additional Zagster bike share station this spring on Commerce Way in Portsmouth.

The Zagster program operates similarly to other bike share programs around the country like Hubway in Boston or Citi Bike in New York City. Since implementing the program in 2017, the City has been exploring opportunities for expanding the program in different areas of Portsmouth through sponsorship agreements with local businesses.

Last year, an agreement was executed with the owners of Portwalk Place to sponsor a station at that location. In total, there were seven Zagster bike stations, with others located at the Memorial Bridge Parking Lot, Bridge Street Parking Lot, City Hall Parking Lot, corner of Summer Street and State Street, on Parrott Avenue at the intersection with Junkins Avenue, and in Market Square behind the North Church.

According to Planning Director Juliet Walker, Kane’s Commerce Way station is an important addition to the growing network of stations and will encourage further use across the City. “We are very happy to see more businesses start to get involved and express interest in sponsorships. Kane’s station is a big contribution towards our goal in expanding our network of bikes beyond the downtown; it provides biking opportunities for many employees in that area and complements our recent roadway improvements along the Market Street Gateway for bicyclists to enjoy.”
