DPW Starts Peirce Island Temporary Sewer Force Main Work on Mon Oct 12

October 9, 2020

The City of Portsmouth Department of Public Works has identified the need to replace a Peirce Island sewer force main pipe that carries wastewater from the Mechanic Street Wastewater Pumping Station to the Peirce Island Wastewater Treatment Facility. The first step in this process is to install a temporary sewer force main along the ground on Peirce Island, stretching from the entrance to the boat launch parking lot to the Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Beginning Monday, October 12, 2020, pipes for the temporary force main will be delivered to the island and stored in the grassy area adjacent to the boat launch parking lot. Over the coming weeks, the pipes will be assembled along the ground and then connected to the buried force main pipe. This work along Peirce Island Road will cause traffic delays and traffic flow adjustments at the boat launch.

This work is separate from work to repair the sewer force main under the Peirce Island Road Bridge, which is scheduled for next month.
