Press Release

On today’s date at approximately 7:08 A.M, the Portsmouth Police Department with the assistance of the Seacoast Emergency Response Team (SERT) arrested the following individual:

Joseph P Kelley

Age: 50

No fixed Address

Portsmouth, NH

Mr. Kelley was arrested on the following charge:

Robbery (Felony)

Kelley was taken into custody on the above charge following an investigation which started on Sunday August 12, 2018 after the police department received a call at approximately 3:34 PM from a woman reporting she had just been robbed while at the drive up ATM of TD Bank located at 1500 Lafayette Road.

The victim and an independent witness were able to provide a description of the suspect and suspect vehicle.  Patrol units searched the area until Officer Max Webber located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of a Portsmouth hotel.  Portsmouth detectives were called in to assist, and Sgt. Seth Tondreault and Det. Lt. Darrin Sargent were able to develop leads and continue with the investigation leading to a possible location of the suspect.

Throughout the night surveillance was conducted and the investigation continued until members of SERT were successfully able to apprehend the suspect Joseph Kelley in the area of Manor Drive in Portsmouth.

The charge is a result of an incident in which Kelley robbed a 55 year old female.  The female victim had just made a withdrawal at the ATM machine when Kelley approached her vehicle, reached inside the window and used physical force to take possession of an undisclosed amount of money.

Kelley was processed and will be transported to the Rockingham County Jail.  Kelley declined the services of a bail commissioner and will be video arraigned by Rockingham County Attorney’s Office in the Rockingham County Superior Court as part of the Felonies First Program on Tuesday, August 14.
