Partnership to Promote Bicycle Safety - "Teach the Reach"

October 5, 2020

In an effort to increase awareness and promote bicycle safety, the Portsmouth Police Department has partnered with the City Planning Department and SABR (Seacoast Area Bicycle Riders). Along with education, the partnership aims to spread the message of  “Teach the Reach”, a simple technique that requires drivers and passengers to look back over their shoulder before opening a vehicle door.

On Wednesday, October 7th at 2:00PM (rain date October 8th at 2:00PM) we are kicking off the campaign by explaining and demonstrating the technique outside of Portsmouth City Hall. Along with the demonstration, there will be free giveaways of multi-sport helmets (children’s size), bicycle safety lights and other handouts. The helmets were received from a grant provided by the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
