Internship Opportunities

The Portsmouth Police Department generally offers two internships annually.  One during the school year and one during the summer months.  We are proud of the fact that several of our interns have found their careers with us following their college graduation.

Our interns are exposed to day-to-day city law enforcement as well as a variety of special teams and departments including but not limited to the Investigative Division, K-9 Unit, SERT Team operations, Drone Team, etc.  Interns will have opportunities to participate in ride-a-longs with our officers on any of our 4 shifts.

Various internship expectations also include administrative and clerical tasks (copying, filing, organizing, etc.), research and analysis, and any other project assigned to them by their direct supervisor.

Candidates selected for internship must pass a background investigation, sign confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, as well as complete Criminal Justice Information Services Security Awareness Training.  Additionally required is a confirmation letter from the college or university approving participation in our program.

Applying for an Internship

  1. Go to PoliceApp and create an account.
  2. On PoliceApp, upload a current resume along with a letter from the College or University Department Head approving your participation in the internship.

Intern Qualifications

  1. Must pass a background investigation
  2. Must sign a confidentiality agreement and non-disclosure agreement
  3. Must complete an online CJIS test
