Portsmouth Schools to Celebrate
International Walk to School Day on October 8

Portsmouth, NH – Elementary and middle school students in Portsmouth will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 8.

Approximately 1,535 students from Dondero, Little Harbour and New Franklin Elementary Schools, along with the Portsmouth Middle School, are urged to walk to school that day.  Numerous City and school officials and community volunteers will accompany the students participating in this important community event.

The event will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the school day with kids, parents and   community leaders walking from a location approximately one-half mile from each school.  Walkers will arrive at the school approximately 15 minutes later for a celebration and raffle. This is a rain or shine event.

The Portsmouth schools will join approximately 5,000 schools from all 50 states, as well as children and adults in 40 countries around the world, in celebrating International Walk to School Day.

Walk to School events draw attention to the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by Portsmouth’s Safe Routes to School Committee.

Local businesses that would like to support this program are asked to contact Deborah Finnigan at 766-1415 or dafinnigan@pw.cityofportsmouth.com
