What Seventh Grade Parents Need to Know
Seventh grade is often described as being the most challenging year at the middle school. This may be true because students need to find a balance between increasing school, social, and parent expectations. Struggles arise when students have to prioritize their needs each day. They are expected to take more responsibility for themselves, and this is often difficult. Also, friendships evolve as students explore their personal identities.
Conversations with students range from discussions about academics to fashion and sports. At this age, they begin to choose activities that identify them with particular groups of kids, and reflect their teenage identities. It is important to be patient and supportive during this time of dramatic growth. Seventh grade students tend to adapt very quickly, and most likely, your child will be fine.
If you would like to meet with a teacher or the team, please call the guidance office to set up an appointment. We are happy to meet with you at any time.
Students must pass English, math, science, and social studies if they wish to move on to eighth grade. Summer programs will be required for students who do not pass these courses.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do students get to know the seventh grade faculty? There is a spring preview assembly at which teachers give an overview of curriculum and expectations. This gives students a chance to put a name with a face and review room locations. Typically, we show a student what a day in seventh grade will be like.
Why do teachers in seventh grade request individual notebooks? We have found that one multi-subject notebook hinders organization and can become a "black hole" for papers and notes.
How will my child adjust to the seventh grade schedule and classes? The seventh grade builds on the sound practices of sixth grade. Your son or daughter has been rotating through science and social studies classes in sixth grade in preparation for rotating through four academic teachers in seventh grade.
Will my child have the same teachers for a whole year? English, math, social studies and science teachers are assigned to teams and have those students for a full year.
