Portsmouth Plus Sustainability

Program Description

“The Portsmouth PLUS! mission is to develop Portsmouth Middle School students as life-long learners and contributing citizens through community supported after school programming rich in academic, social, artistic, and physical pursuits.”

To achieve our mission we created Portsmouth PLUS! - an incredible after school collaboration between…
The Portsmouth Middle School’s Homework Club

The after school homework club, staffed by professional educators, takes place at the middle school and functions to provide students with a safe, stable, learning conducive atmosphere for study and homework completion.  Students work in classrooms at the middle school and have access to the library and computer lab. Students are also able to visit with teachers who are not homework club staff as needed.  Registering for the homework club continues throughout the year. If the student you care for is not yet involved, print out and return the homework club enrollment form.

New Heights Adventures for Teens
New Heights is a comprehensive after school program for seacoast adolescents located at the Community Campus.  A major goal of Portsmouth PLUS! is to link middle school curriculum with enrichment activities. Discovery Quest, a geo caching treasure hunt, utilizes GPS technology and mapping skills (a component of the 6th grade social studies curriculum).  During the springtime you can often hear the Discovery Quest participants exclaiming “We’re learning about this in school!”. The cooking club, yoga, and stilting enrichments have aligned with middle school curriculum standards as well. Ever frequently, kids are having the “A-ha!” moments of learning during after school time.

Girlz Rule is a gender specific group facilitated by the Girl Scouts of Swiftwater Council. A core group of 6th grade girls attend this weekly program.  The theme centers on animals and has proven to be an extremely successful way for this group to work together on building social learning strategies and fostering a sense of community.  To learn more about  the Girl Scouts organization please visit http://www.swgirlscouts.org/
