The year-long Early Childhood Education programs at Portsmouth High School teach high school students both how to better work with children in an educational setting and how to prepare for college and work life.

The first year of Early Childhood Education (ECE I) is career-based. Students in this program complete career units and begin creating professional portfolios and resumés while helping in the preschool and learning about the teaching methods.

In the second year program (ECE II) students apply the knowledge gained in ECE I by becoming more involved in the preschool (planning field trips, holiday celebrations, etc.) and preparing for their lives beyond graduation

.
The Early Childhood classes themselves are an integration of ECE I and II students. Teams of 4 or 5 students are created and the teams work in the preschool on a revolving schedule. Team members work together to complete theme-based lesson plans and lesson plan samples in preparation for their week in the preschool.
