Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning was a major factor in last year's celebration being the success that it was. It displayed itself as cooperation among children, adults, staff members, parents and the community in general.

      Here are a few examples:

The children who were finished with all their required assignments, used their time by helping their peers with last minute details, suggestions, and praise.

Many staff members were willing and able to help students with last minute preparations on "Light Night" such as, setting up food, passing out programs, answering questions, making a welcome banner, creating name tags for each child, and setting up a display easel with photographs showing the project and process from start to finish.

Our music teacher, unable to find a lighthouse song for the children to sing, wrote her own. It will be published sometime this year.

The following are the lyrics to the song, The Lighthouse by Diane McGee, Music Teacher, Dondero School, (c) 2001:

Here we are a-drifting on a sea so very strong,
Not knowing where we're going into the night so long,
We're looking for a signal, a way to guide us home,
On the sea so mighty, you feel small and all alone.

Then the lookout spots it, a great beam up ahead,
A bright illumination by which we will be led,
A way to port and home again, a grateful sight to see,
Thank God there is a lighthouse to guide the way for me.

The lighthouse, the lighthouse,
An edifice so strong,
It's there to light the way for us,
We'll just keep holding on.

The lighthouse, the lighthouse,
An edifice so strong,
It guides us all to safety,
It's there the whole night long.
