The children develop of list of materials they will need to make a lighthouse out of paper mache. The art teacher discusses the concept of "sculpture". What is it? How do you make a sculpture? Develop a materials list and send it home to parents. Also ask one parent who is familiar with woodworking to built platforms for the lighthouses to be placed on. You may also choose to submit this list to your school's monthly newsletter.

The following list of materials was used last year:

cardboard tubes (paper towel, toilet paper, packing tubes)
milk cartons and other various size boxes
sand, small stones, toothpicks
tape, glue
scissors, utility knives and small saws
paint
paint mache

For the second art class, the children come prepared with pictures and/or models of their chosen lighthouse. They will spend the entire class drawing their lighthouse with great detail. These drawings will eventually be displayed on the cafeteria wall on "Light Night".

During the third and fourth art classes, children continue to work at their own pace designing their lighthouses. Some children may be ready to paper mache while others continue construction. At this time, the top of their towers must be cut out and tested to make sure the bulb is visible through the opening in the tower.

For the remaining art sessions children will paper mache, paint, and landscape their lighthouses. Those children who are finished work in their classroom wiring and testing their finished product.
