CUSTODIAN SUBSTITUTES
- Substitute Nurses needed. Either AD or BS acceptable. CPR/AED
certification needed.
Pediatric nursing experience preferred but not necessary if you feel
comfortable dealing with any ages K-12. Strong critical thinking skills
essential. Must be comfortable working independently in the school
setting as well as with students with medical/nursing needs.

Application Process
Thank you for your interest in the Portsmouth School System. This section spells out the process and requirements which each applicant must follow when seeking professional employment with the Portsmouth Schools.
Your initial packet must include the following:
- A brief cover letter indicating the position(s) for which you are applying
- Resume to include:
- employment history
- educational background (degrees you hold or are currently working on)
- list of awards and commendations
- history of extracurricular experience
- history of work with special education students
- experience with school-community partnerships and community activities
- any other items of interest
- Three (3) current letters of professional reference
- Copies of college transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for the initial application, but official copies will be required from finalists)
- Copy of current New Hampshire teacher certification. If certified in another state(s), please include a copy of certification(s).

During the interview, please be prepared to provide or address the following:
1) A sample lesson/unit plan.
2) A written philosophy statement which includes your views on
homogeneous/heterogeneous grouping, inclusion, student assessment,
professional growth, parent contacts, and student discipline.
3) History of experience with school improvement projects, i.e. strategic planning, school improvement programs
4) History of experiences with our Quality Practices:
- Process Learning
- Cooperative/Collaborative Learning
- Problem-Centered Learning
- Continuous Student Assessment
5) Experience with block scheduling, including strategies utilized
(applicants for high school positions)
Finalists will be required to submit a videotape of a lesson, or will participate in an on-site observation by the selection team.
Recruitment Team
The recruitment team will consist of the building principal or his/her designee, director, department head or team leader, and at least one other professional staff member when appropriate.
Process
The recruitment team will review all applications and decide on the best applicants to interview.
Observation of the Finalists
The recruitment team will send representatives of the team to observe the candidate teaching at his/her present school. If this is not possible, the candidate will be invited to teach classes in Portsmouth so the recruitment team can observe the candidate. The recruitment team will make the final selections and recommendations to the Superintendent of Schools.
Teachers' Master Contract
PAY & BENEFITS -
Thirteen steps - BA, MA, M+15, M+30, 2MA/CAGS, Ph.D.
INSURANCE -
Life insurance (2 times salary) no cost to employee
Health insurance - Employee pays 16% BC/BS COMP 100 Managed Care, Blue
Choice, or Healthsource Health Maintenance Plan
Delta Dental Plan #1 - no deductible - no cost to employee
Disability Insurance - 66 2/3% of monthly salary until age 65
CONTRACT -
SCHOOLYEAR- 185 days
SCHOOL DAY - 8 hour on-site school day with six hours instructional/duty time
COURSE REIMBURSEMENT - Cost of 4-credit graduate course at UNH
LEAVES -
Sick leave - 12 days of which 2 may be used for personal business (after 5 years - 17 days)
Bereavement - 10 days for spouse or child - 5 days for parent or parent-in-law, sister, brother - 3 days sibling-in-law, grandparent, aunt, uncle, 1 day (may be granted) for niece, nephew, cousin, close personal friend
Sick Leave Bank - can borrow up to 183 days
Any teacher who has not used sick or personal days in a school year receives an additional day's pay
CLASS SIZES -
defined in contract - school board's priority has been in keeping class sizes low - weight factor for handicap students is applied to class size according to the contract (paraprofessionals are hired for handicap students)
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE -
ending with binding arbitration. After 2 years in the system all teachers have just cause (no teacher shall be on renewed, suspended, disciplined, reprimanded, adversely evaluated, reduced in rank or compensation, or deprived of any professional advantage without just cause)
