Senior Newsletter 2015


Weather Policy:

The Senior Activity Center will close if the Portsmouth schools are canceled due to weather. In the event of a school delay, the center will open at the regular time.

Also "Community Campus" posts their closing schedule along with the school listings. If Community Campus is closed then the center will be closed as well.

Please note that even if the center is open for the day, a class instructors may chose to cancel their class.

Blue Ribbon Senior Committee Report
In July of 2013, Mayor Eric Spear created a Blue Ribbon Senior Committee with the charge to advise the City Council on developing a Senior Center. The Senior Committee met eight times from August through December 2013 and developed a report and recommendations for the City Council for further review. Senior Winter Workout
Mondays, 10AM
January 26 – March 30, 2015 (no class on Feb 16)
Cost:  $45 for 9 classes       Ages 50+ welcome
Active aging group exercise classes are designed to help seniors and older adults maintain their cardiovascular health, balance, strength and flexibility.  Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase strength and range of motion, improving activities of daily living.  Perfect cure for the winter blues!

Walking: Tuesdays & Thursdays
Every Tuesday and Thursday in the Community Campus gymnasium anytime between 9:00-10:00am.
Free and open to everyone. Basketball also available to shoot hoops.
10 laps equals ½ mile. 
Always someone to walk with or walk by yourself.
Stop by the Senior Activity Center to get a cup of coffee/tea and find a walking buddy.

Lunch Bunch
Meet the 2nd Wednesday of every month for lunch with friends…and yet-to-meet friends.
11:30am meet at the restaurant.
Each person is responsible for their own lunch.

Group Empowerment Drumming – Come and join the fun!

We will use a variety of drums including West African, North African, Native American as well as various rhythm making instruments.  We will supply the instruments.
Systematic inquiry into the relationship between music and brain function is one of the most rapidly developing fields of human research. "Music making offers extensive exercise for brain cells and their synapses (connections). It would be difficult to find another activity that engages so many of the brain's systems."(Weinberger, N., 1998)

Drop in Art
Every Wednesday 12:00-1:00pm
Each week create a fun take home project. Projects include painting a little bird house and painting a flower scene on canvas. No experience with painting needed, just a fun hour of art.

Gentle Yoga with Sherry
Every Wednesday from 10-11am
Senior Activity Center
$5 per class
A yoga class designed just for you! 
Open to all levels, including beginners. This gentle yoga class incorporates traditional postures, moving from seated to kneeling to standing. Modifications are offered for each pose and suggestions made in the use of supportive props, such as blocks, cushions, blankets, a chair or the wall. Each student is encouraged to let their body be their guide. In this class we will:

  • Increase flexibility and gain strength
  • Improve balance and posture
  • Increase range of motion
  • Deepen the breathe, relax and still the mind

Sherry Evans, a senior herself, is a certified yoga teacher in the Classical tradition and has been teaching seniors for several years.  She also teaches a monthly restorative yoga class and all level yoga classes at Gateway Taiji, Qigong and Yoga (Portsmouth, NH). Every Monday from 1:00-3:00pm
Senior Activity Center
Play Scrabble and Upwords and enjoy the company of others. Several boards will be set up to play. Free – everyone welcome. This is a popular activity…we hope you join us too!

Foot Care Clinic
2nd Monday of the month starting at 10:00am. Cornerstone VNA nurse will trim toenails and examin your foot. Feel free to bring water bucket to soak feet and a towel and lotion.
Drop-ins welcome between 10-11am or call to make a reservation at 603-610-4433.
At Senior Activity Center at Community Campus. Private room available for the foot care and toenail trimming. $25. Free coffee and tea available while you wait.
