Senior Activity Center
The Senior Activity Center is located at Community Campus, 100 Campus Drive in the former Mark Wentworth Senior Enrichment Center.
The Senior Services office is also located in the Senior Activity Center.
Starting July 7 the Center will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm.
Introduction to Sketch-Booking and Drawing
Sketching is an enjoyable way of quickly capturing ideas, moments and inspirations. It encompasses a variety of skills and is a good entry point into the world of artistic expression.
4 Fridays; August 8-29 from 1pm-3pm
$50.00 includes all lessons and materials to keep. Materials include a sketchbook, graphite pencil and black ink pen.
Some of the things that will be touched upon in this class:
– Explore and develop drawing styles and techniques
– Learn the basics of shading, light, forms and composition
– Practice capturing unique characteristics of people, places and objects
– Enjoy the freedom of artistically expressing yourself
– Enhance visual and aesthetic observation skills
Leigh Cronin is a student artist from Portsmouth. Currently studying visual communications at Studio M Academy in Montpellier, France. She is enthusiastic about sharing her ever expanding interest in different art styles, techniques and mediums.

NEW!! Walking Group at Community Campus
Every Tuesday starting August 12
Meet at 9:00am at the rear entrance to Community Campus
Walk will include a shaded walk through well groomed walking trail then down the paved campus drive. Walk should take apx 30-min. Longer walking routes available for those who would like to keep on trekking!
Passport Information Day
Tuesday, August 12
Everyone Welcome – all Ages
From 10:00am-1:00pm the Senior Activity Center will host two passport specialists from the National Passport Center to answer any and all passport related questions. They will also screen any citizenship evidence that is brought in that day to insure it is acceptable for passport purposes. This will help streamline the passport application process. Since 9/11 regulations about travel have changed and the passport regulations have become stricter. They will also have luggage tags, handouts and pens available. Rockingham Community Action staff will be on site to take applications for both fuel and electric assistance programs.
- Please bring all income documentation for the past 30 days/365 days.
- Please bring all of the documentation listed below that pertain to all individuals in your household:
SS benefit letter or bank statement SSI pension HHS benefits letter IRA or annuity statements paystubs alimony/support 2013 tax return copy of social security card mortgage/rent current electric bill 12 month usage heating bill.

Lunches take place on the 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of the month.
Soup, salad, sandwich & dessert are served for $5.00
Lunch is served at 12:00pm, but guests are welcome to arrive as early as 10:00am to chat and socialize in the senior activity center.

Drop in Art
Each week create a fun take home project. Projects include painting a little bird house and painting a flower scene on canvas. All under the instruction of an art instructor. No experience with painting needed, just a fun hour of art.

Senior Movie Days
The Senior Activity Center will be showing movies on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 11:30am.

Gentle Yoga with Sherry
Every Wednesday from 10-11am starting September 17

A yoga class designed just for you!
Open to all levels, including beginners. This gentle yoga class incorporates traditional postures, moving from seated to kneeling to standing. Modifications are offered for each pose and suggestions made in the use of supportive props, such as blocks, cushions, blankets, a chair or the wall. Each student is encouraged to let their body be their guide. In this class we will:
- Increase flexibility and gain strength
- Improve balance and posture
- Increase range of motion
- Deepen the breathe, relax and still the mind
Sherry Evans, a senior herself, is a certified yoga teacher in the Classical tradition and has been teaching seniors for several years. She also teaches a monthly restorative yoga class and all level yoga classes at Gateway Taiji, Qigong and Yoga (Portsmouth, NH). Sherry believes that anyone can practice yoga. Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias Lecture

Extended Family and Portsmouth Senior Services are pleased to offer an information session about Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias. This lecture is free and open to the public. J. Bludau, M.D. from Eliot Memory & Mobility Center will be giving an update on the latest on diagnosis and treatments. He will also talk about what is currently understood about prevention.

Murder Mystery Matinee Trip
Thursday, October 30
Take a motor coach bus (with bathrooms) to Randolph, MA for a fun murder mystery luncheon. None of the performers will be dressed in costume and it will be your job to figure out who-done-it! It could be someone at your very own table. The meal will be roast turkey with all the fixings, minestrone soup, dinner role, dessert, coffee and tea. Reservations will be taken in September by calling the Senior Activity Center at 610-4433.
Senior Strength & Cardio

Active aging group exercise classes are designed to help seniors and older adults maintain their cardiovascular health, strength and flexibility. Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living.
Boomer Boot Camp for Ages 55+
Wednesdays at 7am beginning October 1
8 weekly sessions - $60
Boot Camp burns calories and is designed to help you reach your fitness goals. It alternates cardio workouts with strength training exercises, resulting in improvements in your physical well-being and self-confidence, as well as increased strength and endurance. Sign up today and get in shape for the holidays.

Bone Builders Senior Exercise

Blue Ribbon Senior Committee Report
In July of 2013, Mayor Eric Spear created a Blue Ribbon Senior Committee with the charge to advise the City Council on developing a Senior Center. The Senior Committee met eight times from August through December 2013 and developed a report and recommendations for the City Council for further review. Vial of Life Program
The Portsmouth Police Department is pleased to offer, free of charge, the Vial of Life kit. It is designed to speak for you when you can't speak for yourself. The vial contains important medical information that can assist emergency personnel in administering the proper medical treatment. 4 easy steps; 1) fill out the form, 2) put the form in the special baggie, 3) hang the baggie on your fridge, and 4) hang the Vial of Life decal on front door.

CarFit on Thursday, July 17
CarFit is a free, interactive and educational program designed to improve older driver safety. Trained volunteers provide information to unsure the safest "fit" for older drivers in the vehicles. Volunteers will give participants useful advice on making their car fit them while driving. For example helping adjust seats, mirrors, steering wheel, and seatbelt. Drivers may think that they are fitted well for their car, but the volunteers can help make simple adjustments that create a safer more secure driving experience. Hosted by Northeast Rehab and sponsored by AAA and AARP.
