Adult Day Trips
The Portsmouth Recreation Department is pleased to offer a full schedule of adult day trips over the fall, winter and spring seasons.
Register for all adult trips at the Spinnaker Point Recreation Center. Registration for all 2018 scheduled trips will begin on Monday, August 20 for residents and Thursday, August 23 for nonresidents. Registration for all 2019 trips will begin Monday, November 5 for residents and Thursday, November 8 for nonresidents.
All day trips leave from the NH Park & Ride on Rte. 33. The Nutcracker Family Trip will depart from Portsmouth High School
Questions or concerns about the trips, including questions on weather delays, can be directed to (603) 766-1483. The price of each trip includes transportation and admission to the main attraction. Lunch and additional admissions are on your own unless specified. NOTE: Please be courteous to all by arriving on time for all day trips.
September 12 - 9:00am - Rockport, MA. Cost: $5/10
Explore the picturesque Cape Ann town of Rockport for the day! There are many places to shop, eat, and relax and enjoy the view.
September 26 - 8:30am - Squam Lake Science Center & Cruise, Holderness, NH; Lunch at Common Man. Cost: $25/30
We will arrive at the Squam Lake area with time to explore the Kirkwood Gardens outside the science center, before boarding the cruise for a private boat ride around Squam Lake. Listen to the tour guide point out the sights and wildlife around the lake, and see the beautiful fall colors of New Hampshire from the water! After the tour we’ll have a late lunch (about 1:00pm) at the Common Man Restaurant in nearby Ashland before heading back to Portsmouth.
October 10 - 9:00am - Castle Hill on Crane Estate, Ipswich, MA; Lunch at the Clam Shack. Cost: $20/$25
Castle Hill on Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA sits on 165 acres of land overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. When we first arrive you’ll have time to explore the beautiful grounds, before we take the “Guests of the Cranes” tour of the 59-room mansion. This tour imagines us in 1929 as we arrive to spend the weekend with the Cranes (there are some stairs to climb to see the second floor). After our tour, we’ll have lunch at the famous Clam Shack in Ipswich.
October 24 - 9:00am - Salem, MA. Cost: $5/10
Our annual Halloween pilgrimage to Spooky Salam! Spend the day visiting the Peabody Essex museum, eat at Salem’s delicious restaurants, and enjoy the Halloween Hullaballoo that Salem is famous for!
November 7 - 9:00am - Oxford Casino, Oxford, ME. Cost: $5/10
Try your luck at the newly expanded casino in Oxford, ME!
December 5 - 9:00am - Faneuil Hall, Boston, MA. Cost: $5/10
Get your holiday shopping done all in one place! Faneuil Hall will be all decked out for you to enjoy a day of shopping and eating!
December 19 - 5:30pm - Family Trip! Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker, Boston, MA. Cost: $60
We invite people of all ages to join the Recreation Department for a magical night in Boston. This New England tradition has been staged yearly for over four decades. We will leave from the high school in a coach bus at 5:30pm for the 7:30pm performance. We’ll watch mice dance, trees grow and toys come to life during the two hour performance. Expect to be back in Portsmouth about 11:00pm.
January 9 - 9:00am - Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. Cost: $25/30
We’re heading back for this perennial favorite! The Boston MFA has one of the finest art collections in the country. They have many different free guided tours offered throughout the day. They will have several special exhibits running when we visit: Cecilia Vicuña: Disappeared Quipu, an exhibit on Incan Art and Culture; Boston Made Arts and Crafts Jewelry and Metalwork; and Ansel Adams in Our Time. Some of the special exhibits may cost extra. Lunch is at one of several eateries located within the museum.
January 23 - 9:00am - Public Library Tour, Boston, MA; Lunch at “The Pru”. Cost: $10/15
Established in 1848, the Boston Public Library was the first large free municipal library in the United States, the first public library to lend books, the first to have a branch library, and the first to have a children’s room. We will learn more about the library, about the beautiful building it is housed in, and some of the art housed there on a private “Art & Architecture Tour.” After the tour you will have time to look around and eat lunch at one of the Library’s eateries, or walk one block down to the Prudential Tower.
February 6 - 9:00am - Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the US Senate, Boston, MA; Lunch at Kelly’s Roast Beef. Cost: $20/25
The EMK Institute stands right next to the Kennedy Library. Here at the center you’ll be greeted as a Senator, be able to see a mock Senate chamber and Senatorial displays, experience a Senate debate and even take part in a Senate vote. On the way home we’ll stop at Kelly’s Roast Beef in Saugus for lunch.
February 20 - 8:30am - New England Aquarium & IMAX Movie, Boston, MA. Cost: $35/40
The New England Aquarium is filled with innovative, interactive and beautiful exhibits to explore. Included in the day will be a movie in the IMAX theater next door! Lunch is at the onsite cafeteria.
March 13 - 9:00am - Boston Flower Show, Boston, MA. Cost: $20/25
Get a jump on your spring gardens while exploring all the beautiful displays, garden supplies and yummy eats!
March 27 - 9:00am - NH State House & State Library, Concord, NH. Lunch at the Common Man. Cost: $5/10
We’ll learn all about the inner workings of the NH State House with a private tour, and explore the NH State Library across the street. Lunch is just down the road at the Concord Common Man.
April 10 - 8:30am - Mt Washington Weather Discovery Center, Afternoon in North Conway, NH. Cost: $10/15
The Mount Washington Weather Discovery Center in North Conway is an interactive museum where you can learn about the atmosphere and the extreme weather experienced on NH’s highest peak! After the museum you’ll have time on your own to eat and shop in downtown North Conway.
April 24 - 9:30am - Portland, ME. Cost: $5/10
Spend the day in Maine’s largest little city! Begin your day at the waterfront or at the Portland Museum of Art. Portland has many stores, museums and restaurants to see!
May 8 - 8:30am - USS Constitution, Boston, MA; Water Taxi to Lunch at Legal Sea Foods. Cost: $15/20
The USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat! Newly refurbished, we’ll have a tour about the construction of Old Ironsides, then have time to explore the exhibits. We’ll then take an MBTA Water Taxi across the bay to have lunch at Legal Sea Foods.
May 22 - 8:30am - Fenway Park Tour, Boston, MA; Lunch at Tony C’s. Cost: $25/30.
Join us for a behind the scenes look at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark! After our tour we’ll have lunch at nearby Tony C’s, named after Red Sox great Tony Conigliaro.
