Project # 15 State Street Reconstruction

Portsmouth – Final paving is scheduled to begin May 9 for sections of the State Street Reconstruction Project, which may result in minimal traffic disruptions.

Work crews will begin the final layer of paving on Penhallow Street, Custom House Court, Chapel Street, Atkinson Street, and Marcy Street next week, along with work to install final landscaping, manholes inverts, and brickwork. Access to State Street businesses and residences will be maintained at all times. The work will be conducted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Final paving of State Street is anticipated for the end of May.

The $4.5 million State Street project was designed to replace and separate the aging combined sewer and stormwater pipes, as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, while improving the safety and the appearance of the State Street corridor between Pleasant Street and the Memorial Bridge.

Information regarding times, location and any planned traffic detours for construction activities are available via the “State Street Reconstruction” link at www.cityofportsmouth.com. The information is updated bi-weekly. Anyone with questions should contact Rick Dolce at 766-1413 or Peter Rice at 766-1416.

State Street Utilities Upgrade and Roadway Improvements

Project Update – April 16 to April 29, 2010

The Sewer, Drainage and Roadway Reconstruction Work on Custom House Court will be completed the end of next week.  The installation of the new sewer line, services and structures was completed this week.  The drainage improvements will also be completed by end of day tomorrow.  Grading of roadway gravel subgrade will commence the end of this week and installation of bituminous binder pavement will be completed the week of April 25th.  Temporary parking passes will remain in effect through the end of next week.  Those people who have temporary parking passes must return them by May 3rd.  Final pavement installation will be completed in late May, concurrent with final pavement installation on State Street and Penhallow Street.   During completion of this work, Custom House Court will not be accessible to vehicles from 7 AM to 5 PM.  We respectfully request the cooperation of the businesses and residents on Custom House Court to relocate their vehicles in advance of the work commencing each day.

Minor work on State Street will also continue over the next several weeks.  A number of sewer manhole inverts have been constructed and frames and grates of some catch basins and drain manholes have been raised to final grade.  The remaining work also includes completion of the landscaping and tree planting and final adjustment to the brick sidewalks.  Construction crews will need to occupy 1 to 2 parking spaces for access to the structures and some temporary single travel lane closures may be required to complete their work.  The Contractor anticipates completing all of the remaining work and installing final pavement and pavement markings during before the end of May.
