Investigating Child Abuse
And Child Fatalities

Wednesday-Thursday, May 21-22, 2008
Portsmouth, New Hampshire Police Department

The Portsmouth, NH Police Department is proud to present “Investigating Child Abuse and Fatalities,” an in depth investigative seminar.  This two day program is geared toward the Child Abuse Investigator and Prosecutor. The seminar will assist the investigator in developing the skills required to complete an effective and comprehensive investigation. This training will expose the participant to investigative strategies to determine the presence of abuse on a child.  Discussion will take place on different forms of abuse and neglect that occur which will include injuries to the skin, skeletal trauma, burns, abusive head trauma and sexual abuse.

This is the first opportunity that the Portsmouth Police Department has had to host a training of this kind.  The Department has a long history of being at the forefront of developing and implementing programs that protect children.  We are the coordinating agency for the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and were instrumental in the launching of the first Child Advocacy Center in the State of New Hampshire.  We are committed to protecting the lives and welfare of children in our community and across the State.

This course is presented by Dr. Christine Barron, Clinic Director of ChildSafe Child Protection Program out of the Department of Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.  Dr. Barron completed her Fellowship in Child Abuse and Neglect at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where her responsibilities included the evaluation of children for physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, failure to thrive, and factitious illness by proxy.    Dr. Barron’s duties today at Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the oversight of all clinical aspects of the ChildSafe Child Protection Program as well as the training of all fellows.  She was appointed as the Fellowship Director of Child Abuse Pediatrics at Brown Medical School in 2007.
