On Saturday December 2, 2006, at approx 6:15PM, a nine year old boy was struck by a float during the City’s Holiday parade. The float was actually a trailer being pulled by a pick up truck. The truck was driven by an adult. The trailer was occupied by approx 15-20 Cub Scouts ranging in ages from 8 to 11.
The accident occurred on Islington St in the vicinity of Columbia shortly after the parade started. The boy was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital by ambulance where he died of his injuries.
His parents have been notified. The parents of the other children at the scene were transported to the police station where they were counseled by a critical incident specialist along with the police departments Chaplin about how to help their children deal with this tragic accident.
At this time the accident is still under investigation. The investigation is being conducted by the Portsmouth Police Dept’s Accident Investigation Team in conjunction with the Rockingham County Attorneys Office. No charges are pending.
We are asking that if anyone witnessed the accident, or perhaps has video or photos of the parade route at Islington and Columbia, in the vicinity of The Bread Box or Dunkin Dounts to call Lt. Rod McQuate at 610-7531 or Crimestoppers at 427-1199.
No other details will be released at this time.
It goes without saying that is a terrible tragedy. As a police dept, as a community, our hearts are broken.
We anticipate having more information to release to the media Monday afternoon.
