Reference: Police Explorers competition

Date of Release: September 25th, 2006

On Saturday, September 23rd, 2006, eleven members of the Portsmouth Police Explorer Post won second place overall in the annual Police Explorer Weekend Challenge, held this year at the Hidden Valley Scout Camp in Gilmanton, New Hampshire.

The Portsmouth Police Explorers competed against ten other teams from New Hampshire and one team from Massachusetts. Among the events were: Pistol competition, motor vehicle stops, obstacle course, first aid and building searches. The top three teams will move on to the New England competition scheduled for later in the year in Connecticut.

The Portsmouth Police Explorers are open to youths who are at least fourteen years old and have completed the eighth grade. The Explorers have weekly meetings at the Portsmouth Police Department where they participate in hands on activities and classroom lectures on various topics in law enforcement and criminal justice. These activities are coordinated by full time officers of the Portsmouth Police Department.

The Portsmouth Police Explorers are active in assisting with public events throughout the city all year. Anyone who is interested in joining the Explorers is asked to contact Detective Robert Munson, who is also the School Resource Officer at Portsmouth High School. He can be reached at 610-7506.
