Reference: National Night Out Planning to Begin

Portsmouth Police and the Citywide Neighborhood Committee are once again partnering to organize Portsmouth's annual National Night Out Against Crime (NNO). The first organizational meeting of neighborhood representatives will be held in Conference Room A at City Hall at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, June 20.

Portsmouth is one of 10,000 communities from 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide that participate in this event which is organized by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).

NNO is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. It is celebrated annually with block parties, cookouts, visits from police, public works, and fire departments as well as city officials, contests, and youth programs.

NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer community.

Neighborhood representatives are encouraged to attend the meeting if they are planning on or just considering participating in this year's NNO. The meeting will be an opportunity to see what other neighborhoods do for the evening. Gatherings can be as simple as having punch and cookies to hosting neighborhood cookouts with games and contests.

NNO is all about having fun and getting neighbors to know each other - that's the best way to prevent crime! Kids have a chance to climb on public works trucks, fire engines, and police cars. They even get to honk the horns, sound the sirens, and flash the lights. And for the grownups, it's a great chance to meet both our city staff and elected officials.

For those who haven't done this in the past or who live in neighborhoods with fairly inactive associations, this is a great event to get folks out and involved.
