Reference:Sobriety Checkpoint Results

Date of Release: May 7, 2006

The Portsmouth Police Department, with assistance from several troopers from NH State Police Troop A, a NH Liquor Inspector and a command post provided by Dover PD, conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint last night on the Spaulding Turnpike NB in Portsmouth, NH.

As a result of this effort, five drivers were apprehended for the offense of DWI. In addition to these drunk driving arrests, two more drivers were arrested on drug charges, another for warrants by local District courts, and one operator was arrested as an habitual offender. A passenger in one of the vehicles operated by an impaired driver was also taken into protective custody.

Chief Magnant of the Portsmouth Police Department received a Letter of Commendation last week from the Director of the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency in recognition of the fact that the City of Portmsouth has had NO ALCOHOL RELATED FATALITIES in the last five years despite the high number of liquor licenses issued in this City. They attribute that fact, in large part, to efforts by the Portmsouth Police Department in enforcing motor vehicle laws and Chief Magnant’s aggressive stance on the apprehension of drunk drivers in this City.

The Portsmouth Police Department will continue to make the apprehension of drunk and drugged drivers a high priority throughout 2006. By utilizing random DWI Hunter patrols, Sobriety Checkpoints, Directed Speed patrols, and other tactics, it is our sincere intent to continue to make the streets of Portsmouth safe for you and your families. Before you drink and drive, please consider the potential consequences and make the right choice. Take a cab, call a friend for a ride, or use a designated driver.

The choice is yours, but know that we will utilize all resources to apprehend those who make the wrong decision. Portsmouth Police, NH State Police and the NH Liquor Commission remind you “ You Drink and Drive….You Lose!”
