On Sunday April 22, 2007 at approx. 1310hrs the Portsmouth Police received a call from a resident at Mill Pond Way about finding some dynamite in a detached garage. The residents there had recently purchased this home and while doing some spring cleaning located a container inside a wall to the detached garage that contained what they thought were up to 10 sticks of dynamite. Upon locating these items they called the Police.
The Portsmouth Police responded along with Portsmouth Fire Department and upon initial investigation determined that the objects appeared to be dynamite with partial commercial printing on the salmon colored sticks with the wording “pelosive”. The immediate area was controlled and an evacuation of 2 nearby homes was done as precaution. The State Police Bomb Squad was summoned to the scene.
Upon the State Police Bomb Squad arriving, the initial investigation they conducted also determined these may be explosive dynamite and a State Trooper wearing a full body protective suit was used to inspect the items closer. The items were removed from the container that they were enclosed within (a coffee can and long cardboard chip style container) and they were then found to be a type of road flare made in France. The commercial wording on the side is apparently one that is used by the French authorities to indicate the possibility of an explosive/flammable component to the item.
These items proved to be of little danger to the public and were disposed of by Police officials off site.
