On Friday, March 4th, 2005 at 11:48am, the Portsmouth Police responded to an emergency 911 call at Seacoast Mental Health on Sagamore Ave. Initial reports stated there was a “big” man there who was out of control and distraught. Responding Officers found a man later identified as

who was pointed out by several witnesses as being the person out of control and who they called the Police about. Mr. Purcell fled to the middle of Sagamore Ave, stopping traffic and confronted the officers who were trying to deal with him and coax him out of the roadway. Mr. Purcell then fled on foot towards the woods and was pursued by the 2 Officers.

Officer Chris Cummings was able to catch up with Mr. Purcell and tackle him to the ground. As a result of this action, Officer Cummings suffered an injury to the elbow and was later treated and released from the Portsmouth Hospital. Officer Corey MacDonald was able to handcuff the fighting Mr. Purcell, however he suffered a hand injury while trying to bring Mr. Purcell under control to be handcuffed. Officer MacDonald was treated and released at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
