Reference: Arrest of online enticement of a child

Date of Release: January 25th, 2006

On Wednesday, January 25th, 2006 at approximately 10:05 AM, Portsmouth Police detectives working in their capacity as investigators for the Northern New England Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force arrested:

William N. Croteau
Date of birth 09/01/56
54 Park Street
Hill, New Hampshire 03243

This arrest was made with the assistance of other Portsmouth Police detectives and the Patrol Division. The New London Police Department and the Merrimack County Sheriffs Department also aided in this investigation. It is alleged that Croteau traveled to Portsmouth to have sex with a 14-year-old. That 14-year-old was in fact an undercover detective.

Croteau was charged with one count of Certain Uses of Computer Services Prohibited, contrary to N.H. RSA 649-B:4, a class B Felony. In addition, Croteau was charged with Possession of a Controlled Drug with the Intent to Distribute, contrary to N.H. RSA 318-B:2, also a class B Felony. Both crimes are punishable by imprisonment of up to seven years.

Croteau was arraigned this afternoon in Portsmouth District Court and is being held on $10,000 cash bail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for February 14 in Portsmouth District Court.
