ATTORNEY GENERAL HONORS Portsmouth with top cyber crime cop and agency awards
On January 18, 2007, New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte will recognize the extraordinary efforts that the Portsmouth Police Department made fighting cyber crime last year. The agency, and Detective Michael Leclair, will receive two of eight awards given to New Hampshire investigators, instructors, prosecutors, and agencies during a ceremony at the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training facility in Concord.
Two years ago the New Hampshire Department of Justice (DoJ) published a strategic plan to address cyber crime (available for download from the DoJ web site). As cyber crime requires a collaborative effort from law enforcement across the state the DoJ formed the New Hampshire Cyber Crime Initiative. The New Hampshire Cyber Crime Initiative (NHCCI) is a virtual organization comprised of over 150 law enforcement agencies throughout New Hampshire. The Portsmouth Police Department plays a key role in the NHCCI. Working together the NHCCI has made significant progress:
To date, more than 400 New Hampshire criminal justice personnel have received training in cyber crime investigations and forensics.
The New Hampshire State Police has implemented a remote forensic viewing system that will allow law enforcement officers across the state access to digital evidence that has been processed by the State Laboratory.
To acknowledge this progress the Attorney General initiated the first annual Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Awards for Excellence. Law enforcement agencies across the state were asked to nominate investigators, instructors, prosecutors, and agencies that have made substantive contributions to combating cyber crime in New Hampshire. A total of 25 nominations were received.
The Portsmouth Police Department is the 2007 winner in the agency category.
Detective Michael Leclair of the Portsmouth Police Department is the 2007 winner in the individual investigator category.
