Reference: Motor Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Accident

Date of Release: January 11th, 2005

On January 11th, 2004 at 11:31am, the Portsmouth Police Department, along with the Portsmouth Fire Department, responded to the area of Store 24 on Islington St. for a report of a pedestrian that had been struck by a motor vehicle. The accident caused both inbound and outbound traffic on Islington St. to be diverted for approximately 40 minutes.

Faye Harris-Cushing, 56, of Portsmouth, was crossing the roadway by Store 24 when she was struck by a 2003 silver Nissan Sentra being driven by Thomas Massaro Jr., 86, also of Portsmouth. At the time of the accident, Massaro Jr. was traveling outbound in the right hand lane of Islington St. A blue van, also traveling outbound on Islington St. but in the left hand lane, had stopped to allow Harris-Cushing to cross. Due to the positioning of the van, Massaro Jr. was unable to see Harris-Cushing crossing the roadway. She was not crossing Islington St. in a marked cross-walk at the time. According to witnesses, Harris-Cushing was struck at a very low speed estimated at 5-10mph. Drugs, alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in this accident.

Harris-Cushing was transported by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Her injuries at this time do not appear to be life threatening in nature. The major contributing factor to this accident was Harris-Cushing failing to yield to traffic in the roadway by not crossing in a marked crosswalk.

If you happened to witness this accident or you have information that may help in the investigation, you are urged to contact Sgt. Frank Warchol at 610-7630 or Portsmouth Crimestoppers at 431-1199.
