Reference: Trick ot Treat Times
The Portsmouth Police Department has set the following date and times for Trick or Treating this year: October 30, 2005 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
In order to assure a happy and SAFE Halloween, the Police Department is offering the following Top Ten Safety Tips for children and adults.
TOP TEN SAFETY TIPS FOR CHILDREN
- DO NOT wear long costumes, high heels or other articles of clothing that could cause you to trip.
- Wear face paints or makeup instead of a mask. Masks can obstruct your vision.
- Wear light or bright-colored costumes (non-flammable) and use reflective tape on clothing. Carry a flashlight or fluorescent glow sticks.
- Young children should be accompanied by an adult. ALL children should travel in groups.
- Be sure to tell an adult what route you are taking and who you will be with.
- Only go to homes of people in your own neighborhood or people that you know.
- DO NOT go into anyone's home or car unless it is a relative or a known friend.
- DO NOT eat ANY treats until you get home and an adult has inspected them.
- DO NOT damage the property of others. Be respectful.
- Use EXTREME caution when crossing the street.
TOP TEN SAFETY TIPS FOR ADULTS
- A Halloween party for children is recommended instead of them going Trick or Treating.
- Keep you porch and walkway well lit.
- Avoid handing out unwrapped candy or fruit. Wrapped treats are best.
- Keep your pets/animals inside you home during Trick or Treating hours.
- DO NOT invite Trick or Treaters into your home.
- Check all of your child's treats for signs of tampering, before allowing the child to eat any of them.
- Throw away all unwrapped candy.
- If you are going to allow your child to eat fruit that he or she received, wash and cut it first.
- If you must drive during Trick or Treat hours, please use extreme caution and watch for children darting out from driveways and out from behind parked vehicles.
- Alert the Police to any suspicious activity, people, cars, treats, etc. in your neighborhood. Call 911.
Halloween is a time for everyone to have fun. Please be careful and have a SAFE and Happy Halloween!
