Reference: Barricaded subject with a knife
During the early evening hours, approximately 7:16 PM, on October 24th, 2008, the Portsmouth Police Department received a call from the staff at the Sunbridge Care and Rehab Center, Jones Ave, Portsmouth, stating that a resident with a knife had entered the room of another resident and barricaded himself in the room.
Officers arrived at the scene and Officer Mike Kotsonis approached the outside window to the room and engaged the suspect in conversation. Officer Eric Benson joined Officer Kotsonis at the window and the officers observed a male suspect standing with his back to the door to the room. That door was shut and a nurse’s cart had been pushed up against the door. The officers also observed that the suspect had a knife in his right hand. The knife was a pocket style knife and the blade was open. The officers could not determine what the subject’s intentions were and the subject refused to drop the knife.
The male resident who lives in the room was in a bed next to the window.
Officer Nicole Mercer, Officer Peter Sheldon and Lt. Rodney McQuate entered the building and found that the door to the room, the suspect was in, opened up into a room where several residents were gathered. The Sunbridge staff moved those residents to another part of the building.
The officers inside the building forced their way into the room and immediately forced the suspect to the ground and took the knife away from him.
