Reference:    Suicide at the Memorial Bridge

On August 2, 2008 at approximately 8:37 am, the Portsmouth Police Department received a call of a man climbing the Memorial Bridge located in downtown Portsmouth NH.  Officers arrived within minutes and saw a person standing on a metal beam stretching over the Piscataqua River.   This person was approximately 200 feet above the water.   Police officers shut down both sides of the bridge and members from the U.S. Coast Guard, Portsmouth Fire Department and Marine Patrol responded with rescue boats.

Officers attempted to speak to the subject but within eight minutes the subject had jumped off the bridge.  Members of the U.S. Coast Guard retrieved the male and brought him directly to an awaiting ambulance at Harbor Place pier.   CPR was initiated by the Portsmouth Fire Department and the 37 year old male was taken to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he later passed away.

Released by LT. Dante Puopolo for Chief Michael J. Magnant.
