Reference: Market Square Day
On Saturday, June 14th, 2008, from 4:00 AM through 6:00PM, the Chief of Police will be invoking his emergency powers and prohibiting parking on specific streets in the downtown area of the City of Portsmouth for the Market Square Day celebration.
This event will be produced by Pro Portsmouth.
Vehicles shall NOT be parked on the following streets. Violators will be towed at the owner's expense:
Pleasant Street from State Street to Market Square
Market Street from Bow Street to Market Square
Daniel Street from Chapel/Penhallow Streets to Market Square
Fleet Street from State Street to Hanover Street
Hanover Street from Market Street to Maplewood Avenue
Ladd Street for its entire length
Ceres Street from Bow Street to Private Way
High Street from Congress Street to Ladd Street
Vendors not licensed by Pro Portsmouth will not be allowed in the Market Square Day celebration area.
The High/Hanover Parking Garage will have flat fees of five dollars from 6:00 AM-2:00 PM, and three dollars from 2:00 PM-5:00 PM.
Participants are urged to use the shuttle bus service that will run from the Fox Run Mall Festival Parking overflow lot. The shuttle will make a circular route from 9:00 AM through 5:00 PM. The shuttle will drop off/pick up riders on Hanover Street by the High/Hanover Parking Garage. There will be NO COST for this shuttle ride.
The Market Square Day 10K Road Race will begin promptly at 8:58 am. The road race route is as follows:
Start Line is at The North Church
Follow Congress Street & cross intersection to Islington
Take a left on Summer Street
Take a left on State Street
Follow State Street all the way to the bridge to Kittery
Make a big U turn PAST small parking lot – DO NOT CROSS BRIDGE
Take a right on to Bow Street
Take a right on to Market Street
Take AN IMMEDIATE left on to Hanover Street
Take a right on to Maplewood Ave
Pass the Portsmouth Herald
Take a left on to Dennett Street
Follow to end
Take a left on Woodbury Ave
Take a right on to Bartlett St
Follow to end
Take a right on to Islington Street
Take a left on to Essex Ave.
Take a left on to Middle Road
At fork, bear to the right on to South Street
At the light take a left on to Middle Street
At the lights near the Masonic Temple take a right on to Miller Ave
At the lights take a left on South Street
Follow to end
Take a left at the Olde Fish Market
Take AN IMMEDIATE right on to Marcy Street and follow to the finish
This race may cause periodic to significant delays in traffic.
Due to the expected crowds, pet owners are requested not to bring their pets, and skateboards, roller blades, scooters and bicycles will not be permitted.
There will be uniformed police officers present at the Market Square Day celebration to assist the public, and to ensure a safe environment for the participant's enjoyment. The Portsmouth Department of Public Works will also be assisting with barricades for street closures. This is an alcohol free event.
