Portsmouth Police Chief Michael J. Magnant
Portsmouth has consistently been voted one of the most desirable places to live in the country. Approximately one hour north of Boston, and one hour south of Portland, residing on New Hampshire's twelve miles of coastline, many have said that Portsmouth is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in New England.
Portsmouth is a safe community, and a desirable place to visit or live in. This is a direct result of the men and women, sworn and unsworn, who work for the Portsmouth Police Department. They are constantly looking for new ways to reduce crime and improve the quality-of-life for Portsmouth's citizens. Our Department will be aggressive towards any crime, small or big. The Portsmouth Police Department has a state-of-the-art 1.5 million-dollar police/fire/EMS dispatch center made possible through federal grant money. In addition, through the University of New Hampshire, we are 'Project 54' participants and have a number of cruisers that respond to voice commands. All of our cruisers are equipped with portable laptops.
Portsmouth was one of the founding members of the Seacoast Emergency Response Team, (SERT). SERT is a well-equipped, well-trained tactical unit serving eleven communities in the southeast region of New Hampshire. Our Department maintains a number of special teams, including the highly technical accident reconstruction team, our award-winning K-9 unit, our Honor Guard, and our Field Training Program for new officers. The Portsmouth Police Department is also the headquarters for the Northern New England Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and has been responsible for arresting dozens of child sexual predators. We maintain a Family Services Unit within the Detective Bureau, and receive dedicated funding from the U. S. Attorney's Office that supports a street crimes investigation unit.
In 2004 the Portsmouth Police Department was awarded the prestigious Robert J. Trojanowicz Award by the New England Regional Community Policing Council, for its successful long-term community policing strategy.
