MAYOR ANNOUNCES HOLIDAY PARADE THEME
July 27, 2009
PORTSMOUTH – The 2009 annual illuminated Holiday Parade will be Saturday, December 5, and the 2009 theme will be “A Portsmouth Christmas,” Mayor Tom Ferrini announced Monday.
The illuminated Holiday Parade traditionally takes place on the first Saturday evening in December, which this year is December 5. The City of Portsmouth organizes and directs the event.
“Although we are still enjoying summer, Portsmouth’s annual Holiday Parade is so popular that we already have received inquiries about the date and theme so we are releasing the information early this year,” said the Mayor. “Announcing this year’s theme of ‘A Portsmouth Christmas’ now will provide even more time for groups and individuals to plan their entries for this beloved holiday tradition.”
Floats, walking units and marching bands will join Santa Claus in the Holiday Parade that begins at 6 p.m. from Plaza 800 on Islington Street, proceeds down Islington Street to where it turns into Congress Street and then continues to Market Square and onto Pleasant Street before reaching its final destination of the South Playground. As many as 8,000 people are expected to line the 1.1-mile route.
Holiday Parade application forms will be available by Oct. 1 at www.CityofPortsmouth.com or can be requested by e-mailing Parade@CityofPortsmouth.com or by calling 610-7281.
