Performance Poetry on November 17

The Portsmouth Public Library is pleased to present two talented local poets, Karen Nelson of Newton, New Hampshire and Trina Daigle of Newmarket. Entertainment and love of poetry will define the evening of November 17th , as Karen and Trina perform original works in tandem and as soloists. Laughing, crying and hooting are both encouraged and expected. The readings begin at 7PM in the Vaughan Room.

Karen recently moved to New England from California and has read her poetry in Greenwich Village and Santa Monica. She currently teaches creative writing in Newburyport, Massachusetts for the Adult Education Program and is a watercolorist as well as a writer. While residing in California's Anza Borrego Desert State Park, her work took on the color and radiance of her exquisite home. She wrote, "Nothing can stop the light's revelation". Below is an excerpt from her book, I'm Not The Woman You Think I Am.

Efficient, mean and glazed--
ornery trickster with a tricks bag,
someone for you to laugh at, but

never emulate.
I'm not
smooth enough to swallow like
homemade kahluas, or the hugger and pleaser

you've come to know and expect.
I won't be there with ready answers,
a constant smile.
I want something you're not prepared to give.

Trina Daigle is a preschool teacher in Exeter, as well as an artist, writer, singer, storyteller and puppeteer. Her works have appeared in Byline, Sidelines and The Vineyard Gazette. Trina was recently published, along with many other writers, in this Fall's, Seacoast Writer's Association issue of Currents V. Her poem, Let me Weep This Time, is featured on the Portsmouth Poet Laureate's web site at www.ppl.org. Below is an excerpt from the poem.

Let Me Weep This Time

Time stopped the day after Christmas
There was no longer time no longer enough time
Just time enough to be swept under
Swept and kept under by some kind of dark enormous weight
No room to breathe no place to go the chorus says Wait The angels sing Wait
There are places to go and people to see you see I know I know
This time belongs to infinity's time where time can wrap or warp
Weave or wave without anyone knowing without anyone anyone
Still in stillness all goes around and around but time's run out…

Both Karen and Trina are regular participants at the Portsmouth Poetry Hoot held at Café Espresso the first Wednesday of each month.

Light refreshments will be available and there is no charge. Please call the library at 427-1540 or visit our web site at www.cityofportsmouth.com/library for more information.
