The Portsmouth Fire Department and the City of Portsmouth has embarked on a capital improvement project to replace Portsmouth Fire Station 2 located at 2700 Lafayette Road. This current station was built in 1968 and its’ assigned personnel and equipment cover the neighborhoods and businesses along US Route 1 in the southern portion of the city. In 2005 a Fire Station 2 Building Committee was formed that included members of the City Council, the Fire Commission, the fire department, city staff, and public. The mission of the committee was to evaluate the current fire station, develop a contemporary building program for a future facility, and incorporate sustainable practices in both construction and design.
In the spring of 2006 Winter Street Architects of Salem, MA was awarded the contract to design the new facility and in 2007 Baybutt Construction of Keene, NH was contracted to provide the Construction Management Services for the project. The location of the new facility was initially identified as the current 2700 Lafayette Road, but in November 2007, a more suitable lot at 3000 Lafayette Road became available for sale to the City of Portsmouth. Working with the City Manager and City Council, the property was purchased in July of 2008.
On March 25, 2009 site work commenced at 3000 Lafayette Road. It is projected that in the spring of 2010 the fire department will respond out of a new fire station. Along the way the Portsmouth Fire Department and the City staff are committed to building Portsmouth Fire Department Station 2 in the most cost efficient and sustainable way possible.
