News Releases New Fire Boat Delivered 
The City of Portsmouth Fire Department has taken delivery of its new fire boat. The fire boat was manufactured by MetalCraft Marine Incorporated of Kingston Ontario. MetalCraft has proven experience in building high-speed and functional patrol, fire, rescue, and work boats. The Department's fire boat is the Firestorm-30; an open-ocean and inshore high speed fireboat with high volume pumping and rescue capabilities. It is 33' 5" in overall length and is powered by twin 380 hp Cummins diesel engines that drive two Hamilton water jets. The firefighting capabilities of the boat include one master stream, two 2 ½" discharges for hand lines, and one 5" discharge to supply land-based operations. The fire pump on the boat is capable of flowing over 1500 gallons per minute. The fire boat is able to perform in shallow draft conditions and is able to maneuver in tight harbors. The fireboat is capable of operating in inclement conditions including driving rain and dense fog. The new boat replaces a 1983 23' fiberglass, center console boat that was obtained through government surplus. The boat was modified to provide limited fire protection capabilities and was out of the water during the winter months. The fire boat was made possible through the FY 05 Homeland Security Grant Program and strongly supported by Senators Gregg and Sununu and Congressman Bradley, along with the Portsmouth Fire Department Fire Commission, the Portsmouth City Council and City Manager. Fire personnel will be completing a training and orientation program on the fire boat over the next month. At the completion of the program, the department will place the vessel in service as Fire Boat 1. The boat will be maintained and available 24/7, without regard to the time of year or weather conditions and should enable the department to improve and enhance fire, rescue, and marine support services to the Port Community and Seacoast Region. return |
