MARKET STREET NAMED NH’S BEST SHOPPING STREET
PORTSMOUTH - Market Street in downtown Portsmouth has been named New Hampshire’s 2006 Best Shopping Street by Boston magazine’s New England Travel & Life, City officials announced this week.
The award announcement also was made in the magazine’s first annual Best of New England® issue on newsstands through August.
The other New England winners were Newbury Street in Boston, MA; Main Street in Freeport, ME; Thayer Street in Providence, RI; and Church Street in Burlington, VT.
“This award reaffirms what we in Portsmouth already know - that Market Street and downtown Portsmouth constitute a premiere shopping destination that offers unique shops, galleries and boutiques, along with historic architecture and a gracious welcome mat for visitors and local residents, alike,” said Mayor Steve Marchand.
“This award validates other awards and distinctions recently received by the city, including the American Style magazine’s Top 25 Arts Destinations; Inc. Magazine’s ‘Boomtown ’06 List’, and the Governor’s Community Spirit Award,” the Mayor said.
“Also, in 2004 Continental Airlines’ onboard magazine rated Portsmouth as one of the top 10 places to shop in the world along with Milan, Paris, Chicago, New York and others, and in 2003 Fodor’s ranked Portsmouth in its list of the ‘Top Ten Overlooked and Underrated Destinations.’ Each of these accolades recognizes Portsmouth as a unique destination for dining, shopping, job growth and cultural activities,” he said.
Market Street businesses will have the opportunity to order copies of the 2006 award and display it for up to five years, as well as use it in their advertising. However, City officials said displaying it in their front windows would be included in the amount of square footage of advertising that may displayed per City ordinances.
