Public access television took another step forward Monday night with the formulation of the Board of Directors for Portsmouth Public Media, the nonprofit organization that will manage the endeavor.
Last December, the City of Portsmouth’s Cable Television Commission put out a call for applicants for the board and was delighted at the quality and quantity of applications received. After reviewing the 21 applications submitted and interviewing all candidates, the Commission identified 11 individuals for the initial board. This list was shared with Mayor Tom Ferrini, who selected Chase Bailey as his candidate for the mayor’s appointment to the board.
The City Council ratified the entire slate Monday night. Speaking for the Cable Commission, Chairman John Gregg said its members were thrilled with the qualifications of the new Portsmouth Public Media Board and look forward to assisting it as it brings public access television to life in Portsmouth and surrounding communities.
The newly appointed Portsmouth Public Media Board members are: Chase Bailey, film producer; Frank Cook, journalist; Daniel Freund, internet media producer; Glenn Gardner, film producer; Sara Hamilton, marketing director; John Herman, internet media producer; Christopher Ostrom, systems project manager; Samuel Peret, operations center technician; Sharon Cuddy Somers, lawyer; Jack Thorsen, technology management executive; and David Underhill, news media consultant.
The new Board members will join the Cable Commission at its meeting Thursday, March 25, at 4 p.m. in City Hall Conference Room A.
The board’s task is to formulate plans to introduce non-commercial, locally produced news, information, and entertainment television and internet video to Portsmouth and surrounding communities who opt to receive it. Comcast has agreed to make a channel available for this purpose but has not yet designated it.
