Each fourth grade is required to teach a unit on electricity. At the end of the unit, the children must show evidence that they can create a complete circuit, with a switch, that will light up an object. Because lighthouses have been of interest to both the art teacher and myself, and because we live in a community on the seacoast it seemed natural to choose lighthouses as our object to illuminate.
We began by doing simple experiments to see how a complete circuit was achieved. The children were then able to tranfer their knowledge to complete their lighthouses. Materials were provided by the school system and each child was able to take their completed lighthouses home after illuminating them at "Light Night" and displaying them in the school's front foyer.
