Reference: Motor Vehicle Accident

Date of Release: Monday, October 16th, 2006 1515hrs.

On Monday October 16th at approx 1011am, the Portsmouth Police Department received numerous 911 phone calls advising of a serious head on collision on Route 33 near Dodge Ave. Responding with the Portsmouth Fire Department and Ambulance, first responding officers confirmed initial reports and immediately closed down thru traffic on Route 33 while administering emergency first aid to those involved.

Preliminary investigation shows that a

driven by
Michael B. Baker age 40
of Hampton, N.H.

was traveling easterly (inbound) on Route 33. A

2006 Buick 4 door color Silver
driven by
Barbara M. Daly, age 77
of Portsmouth, NH

was traveling westerly (outbound) on Route 33. The vehicles collided head on within the westerly (outbound) lane of travel near the intersection of Dodge Ave. As a result of this accident both drivers were transported to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital and later airlifted to Boston Hospitals with serious possibly life threatening injuries. The roadway of Route 33 was shut down for investigation from the time of the accident until 1500hrs (4.5hours) when it was re-opened for general traffic. Preliminary invst suggests that the Ford Expedition was in the wrong travel lane at the time of the collision.

The accident is being investigated by members of the Portsmouth Police Accident Investigation Team along with the Rockingham County Attorneys Office and was assisted with traffic control on scene by members of the NH State Police, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department, NH Fish and Game and Greenland Police. No arrests or citations have been made or issued at this point in the investigation.
